I will follow you to MySQL errors and SEO

Posted on March 29th in General, WordPress — One Comment so far. Got something to say?

Title a little confusing? Hopefully not after this, but in a nutshell I added the DoFollow WP plugin and there might have been some MySQL errors last night. Also, I’ve been tracking the Calacanis SEO challenge, and the tips are pretty good!

DoFollow Plugin For WordPress

I can’t believe it’s taken so long for me to install something that will removed the NoFollow from all comments. This is some Akismet should do, seeing as it filters out all the trackback spam anyways. Now all the search bots and stuff will crawl through here and on to your site, which is good if you’re not indexed yet, or it happen more I guess. To get this plugin working, it’s the basic of all basic steps, but I get people asking me all the time how to install themes and plugins. Here it is!

  • Download this file. Save it as dofollow.php to your Desktop
  • Upload dofollow.php to the plugins directory: pathtowp/plugins/dofollow.php
  • Active it in your Admin panel’s plugins page.

See? Simple. Same goes for themes, but in the themes directory, and themes page.

MySQL Problems Last Night
So DreamHost was having some problems with MySQL last night, and I’m not sure whether or not this site was affected (all my other ones were) because this is cached. Hopefully everything was alright, and the downtime didn’t last long if it did indeed happen. Anyways…

The Calacanis SEO Challenge
Basically, Jason Calacanis is doing some experiments with SEO to improve traffic. It is working very very well, as you can see from this image (from PronetAdvertising):

Some of the things he’s doing are quite easy to do, and may even have relatively short term effects. The two things I’m going to start doing are:

  1. Change page titles from “Title at Connor Wilson” to just “Title”
  2. Change the description meta from nothing to a short excerpt of the post/page.

I don’t get much Google/SE traffic at all, and I think improving that is the next step for me traffic wise. Search engines account for around 3.3% of my total traffic, but the terms are pretty obvious…

  • Connor - 46
  • Wilson - 46
  • Connorwilson - 5

Not much diversity there, eh?

Now I have to get back to work! I’m quite busy, which is why I’m not post as regularly as I can.
