New MacPro: Up to $18,371. Future proofing?
The new MacPro has just been announced by Apple, and its huge. Up to eight cores. This computer, when configured in the most expensive way, reaches almost $20,000 USD. $18,371. Needless to say, this is the price of future proofing. Here’s what you get, at a glance:
- Two 3.0GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon
- 16GB (8 x 2GB) RAM.
- 750GB 7200-rpm Serial ATA 3Gb/s x4 for 3TB total space
- NVIDIA Quadro FX 4500 512MB, Stereo 3D (2 x dual-link DVI)
- Apple Cinema HD Display (30″ flat panel), times two.
Is this the price of the future? Seeing as nowadays a $1000 Windows PC will last 3-6 years, and a $1000 iMac would probably last a little longer. By that logic it would take up to 108 years for your ‘investment’ to become… well made.
Who needs a $20,000 computer? Well, who doesn’t? It’s just matter of who can afford one now. But of course, this model starts well equipped from about $2,500. You won’t get eight cores, 16GB of RAM, or one of the strongest graphics cards ever made, but you still get a lot of bang-for-your-buck. But the question rests- is $20,000 still bang-for-your-buck? I’d have to say yes, all things considered.
In conclusion: Wow.
