Back on Top of Blogger [Part 2]

Posted on April 17th in Ramblings, Site Development — 9 Comments so far. Got something to say?

A while ago I posted saying I had finally beat out some guy’s blogger profile for the #1 Google spot for my name. In that post I said that the number one contributing factor that that little bit of SERP fun was keyword density. Well, I was wrong. Shortly after that things returned to normal and I was back to #2, even #3 for a day or so.

Keyword density is only a short term thing and is not a solution. It can help, but it’s not anything that will get you on the first page for a competitive term by itself. What actually worked? What is the secret to good rankings?

Not to sound cliche, buts it’s all in the backlinks. That may be what everyone says, but that’s how it happens. The more backlinks with the anchor text of your targeted keyword, and the higher you will rank. Plain and simple.

So basically, the more links saying Connor Wilson, the better my ranking got. Here’s some things that didn’t seem to work on the blogger profile:

  • PageRank. This site is PR5 as of now (although an update is soon to come) and the competitors were all 4 or below.
  • Good Content. It was just a page with nothing on it. Thats what my trouble was…
  • I’m not owned by Google. Enough said?
  • Blogger.com is a lot older than this domain. Longevity is a good indicator of good and real content, and trust.

But now it’s gone, and I’m back to #1 and looking to keep it there. Now I can focus on getting some more organic traffic for keywords that I haven’t had a shot at yet. I do get some of this kind of traffic, for cool keywords like these:

  •  contact serverseed
  • processor
  • imac dimesions
  • percentage of americans that are illiterate
  • squirremail greasemonkey

Though I only get 5-15 SE hits a day, its improving, and I think thats the key to building steady traffic.

    Hi Connor,

i haven’t seen for how long do you have the blog.
and also how much backlinks with this anchor text are youtalking about?

i just want to get to know what is to be done in order to become no 1 for “webee”.
i know that this would depend on the strength of my “competitor” …
but i just want to have a value to start from ;)
    webee.
PS: thanks again for having me on the blogroll!

There’s no real set limit or benchmark to how many backlinks you need with the specific text, and it varies. For example, “webee” and “alex mould” would be far less competitive terms that “blog design solutions” or “freelance designer” for example.

With relatively uncompetitive terms like that (meaning no one is purposely SEO’ing and trying for that top spot) you can get it with a moderate PR (4 is good, can achieve with good intra-linking) and some links.

Alex, one thing you should do, and webee is doing is to use your full name/term when you comment. It helps especially when blogs like mine have nofollow disabled.

I have had some off beat search terms that have come up with my site, such as david and goalith. My website comes up as second. However, if you search for portrayed, I’m not even on the top 25 pages :(

Oh sweet, now (at least from google.com) Blogger has come back up as #1.

All the other SE’s love me, but not Google for some reason. They must have some sort of biased system towards themselves.
