Why I Bought a Mac [Revisited]

Posted on May 29th in Apple — 6 Comments so far. Got something to say?

It had been heavily documented that I was planning to buy a Mac since around February or so. I’m not even going to bother and link up all the posts, because there were quite a few. At first, it was a Black MacBook, which then my eye shifted over to a MacBook Pro, and then I was interested in the iMac. It’s been a whole six days since my iMac came in the mail, and I really couldn’t be happier.

Looking back on my old PC (I’m already used to the peripherals by now), there are some things (all things for me, actually) that the iMac dominates. So now I present to you the new things that I can’t live without (after a week):

  1. The frills. Anyone would confess one of the reasons that they bought a Mac was the cool stuff. For me however, I didn’t really know about much of the stuff that it could do, but now I’m amazed everyday. Voice activated commands for instance. They may not be funny, but at least my computer will tell me a joke. Or get my email, open my browser, etc…

And who doesn’t love big shiny icons, cool animations, slick UIs and whatnot? The dashboard, Expose and all the built in features of OS X are really impressive. The big screen, high resolution and stuff are just added bonuses.

  2. The sense of security. On Windows you have to run a usually heavy anti-virus app, and even still, you’re never safe. It’s comforting knowing that I’m well off without anything weighing me down. Norton, for example, on of the most popular yet most useless programs in the history of computers. You can’t download anything, run an online game, or even do much on 256mb RAM for that matter. Especially while in a full screen app or something, Norton always feels the need to assert itself and get in your way. Good riddance!
  3. It runs CS3 (and previous) much faster, it’s true. My main applications that I need to preform, well, preform! That’s a nice change.
  4. I’m not going to be gaming much, if at all, so I don’t need a PC that can handle that stuff. Although this piece of hardware is a little powerful and can handle its share, I’m sure.
  5. Count ‘em, two cores. A Luxury I’m experiencing for the first time. At some point I might experiment with over clocking and stuff, but I don’t ever foresee a need to.
  6. Vista is just something I’m not interested in. To me, Microsoft just hasn’t gotten it right yet. They went for a huge GUI that’s all shiny and see through, but at what cost? Now you need a beefy PC to run the OS? What if you want to use the internet? That may be an exaggeration, but the point is there. I upgraded my Windows XP to Service pack 10.4 ;)
  7. Now everyone I know wants one. Once you go Mac, you never go back!

The switch isn’t very hard, and the only advice I can give you, is when setting up the wireless network (super easy on this end) on your PC, if you see the words “Network Magic”, run far away. Get a new router. Network Magic is horrible. It hates OS X.

Can’t wait for my MacBook to arrive! I’m mid-way through writing a post about it too.

Luckily I’ve never heard of “Network Magic” so I doubt I’ll have that problem. Doesn’t sound very “Magic” if it’s only compatible with PC :P

It seems me linking to you in one of my blog posts added some kind of comment to your latest blog — Is that a trackback? (Hey, I’m new to blogging :P)

Well anyway, point was that it was before I updated my URL and so the link there wont work and you may want to remove it ;) Sorry if it’s any bother,

    Andy

Yep, that’s a trackback. I’ll leave it, but trackbacks can be good sources of traffic at times! If you link to a post that then gets on SB sites, you can see quite a bit of hits ;)
