Why are Blogs So Popular?

A blog is many different things to many people. However, a blog (web log, shortened) is essentially a series of writings done by one or multiple authors called ‘posts’ that are time stamped and ordered from newest to oldest.
A Google search for blog turns up almost 1.3 billion results- I think it’s safe to say that blogs are indeed popular. Technorati was tracking about 71 million blogs as of last month. But why?
It’s in the Bloggers
While blog being one thing, there are many types of bloggers- one that updates or adds content to a blog. Those that do it because everyone else is doing it (literally) and those who can get tagged by the “5 Reasons I Blog” meme and actually answer it.
The former is what makes blogging seem so popular, and what kind of makes it a cliché to some. It’s easy to write a MySpace blog every now and then, and maybe a couple of your friends will read it. Writing something that even 20 people will read everyday is no easy feat.
The actual number of blogs that write consistently, and have a good number of readers (lets say 30 or so) would be significantly lower.
So Why Are Blogs So Popular?
It really boils down to two reasons. It’s easy, and free.
What more could you really ask for? Well, it’s easy, free, and you can make money.
Very few people actually make enough money from their blog to actually quit their day job, but that possibility means a lot.
Do You Blog?
You probably do. There are many, many ways to start. This blogging resources list by Blogtrepreneur is a great way for you to get started if you haven’t already, and if you have there’s some things in there.
Happy Blogging!

Hey Connor - great post. I think many people go in to blogging looking at the money perspective like I initially did. But, over time I realized that the friendships made were far more important and that they could really help to kick off any big ideas you may have or will have in the future.
And thanks for the link ;). It’s already been v. popular so far, and I’m just happy knowing that I’m being of help to some people!

I never went into blogging for money. I wanted it to go with my portfolio.

I think that because google owns blogger.com a search for ‘blog’ would turn up millions of hits :d
Wheareas if you searched on yahoo or msn you might get less.

I blog to be a part of a community I otherwise could not.

That’s actually a good point. It is a community kind of thing, especially in a more specific niche, such as web development.

I blog for fun, and also the challenge. I love the idea of building something that is easy to gauge the success of. And with feed counds, and technorati rankings etc blogging is fantastic!
