Post at the Worst Times

Posted on July 3rd in Blogging — 9 Comments so far. Got something to say?

There are some blogs that post many times a day, and follow a strict schedule as to when these posts come out. Some like to have them appear throughout the day at set intervals, and some like to have them all come out at once, usually between 11am and noon.

The reason for the latter is because that time is when many blogs get the most traffic. It’s lunch time, so people might be on their breaks, or at their computers (not working). This way posts can get the most exposure, in theory, but really it just pushes posts down the page. When I have multiple posts coming out in a day, I’ll set them apart a bit so each of them can be read.

On the other side, for me at least, the worst time for traffic is in the wee hours of the morning. Between 1am and 6am is when I receive the fewest hits. To increase traffic, post at your worst times. Posting brings in traffic, pretty automatically, and when a post goes live at midnight or 1am, you’ll get traffic through those times.

You can get more traffic by simply putting up fresh content in the time where you normally wouldn’t get as much traffic, but be sure to put out other content during the day as well. Having one post go live at midnight will leave users hungry after lunch time (no pun, sorry).

Surely if you post at the times you receive the least amount of traffic, you’ll mostly just have people visiting you later rather than earlier? I definitely think spreading posts throughout the day is a good idea though, as you say, not to force your posts down the page too quickly and make them failures as they don’t get noticed.

You would think, but I found that normal traffic stayed the same throughout the day, but the morning was still higher.

This is the 700th comment too :P

Haha, nice tactic then. Thanks for sharing. Reminds me I haven’t blogged in a while, need to catch up.

I always find I have half written posts I want to finish but feel need leaving till later for whatever reasons. :P

Yeah, I definitely feel you there. I have four I think, and only one is likely to ever be published (today, even) :P

I tend to read other people’s blogs in the middle of the night. Unless I’m subscribed to a feed in Feedreader. I have feeds everywhere though.

Good idea.. Most Bloggers have schedulers to release posts as well which could accomodate this fairly easily..

Count me in the group that likes to spread my posts out a little. I sometimes sit down and pound out three posts in an hour, but I try and stagger them so one goes live immediately, the second later in the afternoon and the third after midnight. That way, even if people check my site before they go to bed, they’ve got something new to read when they wake up in the morning or get in the office.

This is purely unscientific but my best guess would be two to three times a day with one in the early morning and the second right after work.

Every 4 to 5 hours with around 200-300 works seems to be a good fit.
