Criticizing for Exposure, Part 2
To start, I’d like to relieve you. This post will have nothing to do with the first, about WordPress and the community and all that stuff.
However, continuing the theme of people doing things for the sake of money and immoral personal benefit, I’d like to talk about this story. This story disgusts me, not because of the pictures, but because of the person all this happened to. I’ll tell you why (duh).
Initial Reaction to the Headline
Chemically burned by a static, non-reacting object? Forgive my High School chemistry, but isn’t “burning”, aka combusting something that happens when oxygen reacts with a chemical? We’re talk Oxygen, as in O, not the air we breathe which is packed with Nitrogen, among other things.
These cheapo flip flops didn’t ignite on her. They didn’t singe her. Her skin had a reaction to the thong over top of the padding.
Now, I’m no MD, but when you have a reaction to something IT’S AN ALLERGY. If it doesn’t happen instantaneously and if there isn’t pain due to burning right away, you weren’t burned. Putting “chemically burned” in place of just “burned” alters people’s thinking. Unless you have common sense, of course.
What gives this attention deprived woman up is this:
this is the first picture I really thought to take, what you can’t really tell is how swollen the red part is…UUUGGGH! this was Jun 28, 2007 9:00 PM 6 days into it
6 days!?! Obviously not burned, obviously a reaction.
A digg user writes this:
Looks like she’s allergic to the Polyurethane upper in the sandal as the bottom is made from EVA foam and she doesn’t seem to have the same reaction. If this was something specific to the sandals then we’d see an epidemic of this happening as I’m sure Wal-Mart sold these things by the millions.
She should see an allergy specialist… And getting a pedicure wouldn’t hurt too!
Perfectly said, and he’s right about her nasty feet. I’m one to talk, but you’ll never see my feet on the internet.
Now I found this story on Digg, as it is still my homepage. I’m banned from Digg, but I’ve yet to change my home page (but won’t go into that). Most Digg users are whiny geek Socialists (who will vote for a Republican, Ron Paul) and feel sorry for the woman, but how hard is it to see that she’s running one big advertising campain?
For what, I don’t know. She blatantly advertises her horrendous graphic design and photography services. I emphasize horrendous, as it’s clear she has no talent, creativity, passion or a brain. But that’s just my innocent observation, from one design to the next.
What I Think Really Is Going On
This thing is totally a conspiracy. Apparently someone else has even contacted her with the same problems. I think she is allergic to the material, and kept wearing the sandals as she knew she would get worse. Why? Not exposure as I speculated above, but the root of all evil. Money. Lots of it. WalMart lawsuit money, to be exact.
This whole thing (the reaction on her feet) started June 22nd. It’s still going on. It got so bad over such a long period of time she must’ve been doing it to her self. The other “victim”? Made up. Email proves nothing, ever. I can send email to myself, too.
She says right at the top of this page that she worked at WalMart, but quit. I don’t know her personally or know why she quit, but that could totally be motivation to get some money out of them.
So, Kerry Stiles, I hope you go to court and have an Allergy expert working from WalMart outs you, and you go thousands of dollars into debt with legal fees. You deserve it. But, if you have the nerve to amputate and settle out of court for millions, I’ll totally support you. If you have the sand (or desperateness) to cut your feet off, I applaud you.
In other news, I just ordered a sweet new red WordPress shirt from their new store.

I saw this article on digg as well and thought she was just seeking attention. It’s ridiculous what people will digg and what they won’t. Tonnes of great articles and stories go by with no notice and garbage like this makes the front page.
