The Art of Giving Away Free Stuff
Not necessarily in a contest setting, but in a random draw sense, giving away free stuff can really do wonders for your traffic. Other sites will link to you, helping promote your contest, comments will increase and traffic/readers could see a permanent raise.
Say you’ve been given something randomly, maybe a video game or your host is doing a promotion. This is the perfect time to ask them if you can give it away on your blog. Never do this without permission (unless you bought it to start with) so you don’t offend anyone.
There are a couple ways you can get people to enter:
- Post a comment. One per person, if the say “enter me” or something, put their name in a hat and draw.
- Write a review. Make them review your site for an entry.
- Link. A simple back link can enter them.
All are ways that benefit your site. That’s really why you would want to run a contest. A little bit of traffic, Technorati boost and in the end someone gets a prize.
The contest that I’m going to running here starting Aug 4th or 5th will probably entail these things, but it will be different. The prize is not something you would think. I’m going to draw on a point system. The more points you have, the more entries. You can do certain things for points, and to enter.
As a blogger, this contest will interest you, so subscribe to my feed so you can enter!
Giving away something free or having a contest is sort of like releasing a(n unsponsored) WordPress theme. Traffic will be there, and you’re still giving back. The WP theme might be a little bit of a better cause (OK, a lot better) but we’ll see the outcome of this and I’ll compare.
