200 Posts - Now What?

Posted on August 25th in Personal — 8 Comments so far. Got something to say?

Today I’d like to discuss milestones, and the future here, and return tomorrow to your… “regularly scheduled programming”. If you’re interested the next two posts are SEO based, so subscribe for updates if you want those the second they hit the presses.

200 Posts

This marks the 200th post since January 13th, 2007, not including those that were deleted from the previous October-November. If you ask me when I started blogging, I’d tell you January, because the Oct-Dec era of this site had many changes, most not blogs.

Anyways, around 224 days ago I wrote my first post. Some how (honestly, I don’t know) this evolved into what you see here today. 200 posts over 224 days seems really good to me, seeing as in the earlier days posting was spotty at best. I guess I’ve made that back lately.

x Comments

The statistic I’m most proud, while may seem small to some, is the comments number. At the time of writing this, x comments have been written. It baffles me. If you told me in January I’d have that many posts and comments (among other things) I would’ve thought I’d have stopped by then.

This pull quote is to draw your eye to this paragraph ;)

I’ve watched this number very closely over the past couple days, willing it closer to 1000, hoping I could reach it by this post. The number is very close to 1000, and that one holy comment could very well be in this post. I don’t have very much to offer as an incentive for whoever takes it (I won’t do it, to make it fair) but I’ll write a full scale review of your site here if you so desire. A full on front/back end and writing critique with some traffic could help anyone ;)

Other Milestones

Over those 224 days I’ve accomplished some other things, and again, these numbers appear small to some, but having earned them from ground zero, it’s a lot to me.

  • August will average over 100 readers. While the increase from July-August may be the smallest in terms of RSS subscribers, it’s that 100 milestone that really counts.
  • My Alexa ranking is nearing the top 100k mark. While on a day to day basis I break that quite a bit, it’s the 3 month average that counts. Although, for one day telling people you have the 46,000th most popular site in the world (Aug 22 stats), especially those who don’t get the whole Alexa thing :P
  • Technorati is one stat I don’t care about. It fluctuates from 75-85 authority for me, but considering I don’t do link trains or scams, it’s not bad for a rank of around 68k.

The Future

I’m glad to say things are only really looking up from here. While FeedBurner’s stats may fluctuate (I wake up nervous on the weekends), I’m looking forward to seeing those numbers increase. I may average over 100 readers by RSS, but I rarely get over 100 visits a day. That’s one more stat I’m proud of. You see a lot of sites that get double, triple or even ten times the amount of traffic compared to the amount of people reading by RSS.

There’s a new design on the way, but there are a bunch of other things that are getting done before that. It’s a low priority right now, but I promise it’ll be much better than this one. I’ve grown to like this design more as time has pressed forward, but I admit it was merely a better alternative to the previous one. I had to get out of the clunky K2 and on to something more SE friendly.

So, all that being said, as this vanity post nears an end, I give you these reasons to comment on this post:

  • Move up, or get on the top commentators list. On September 1st I’m going to dedicate a post to the top commentators of August!
  • The 1000th comment is so close I can eTasteTM it. The beholder gets a full post dedicated to a review of their site. Front end (design), code, writing, etc… critique. And traffic from that ;)
  • Bragging rights when there’s 10000 comments?

Get on it!

Grats Connor those are some awesome stats. How the hell you wrote 200 posts in 224 days I’ll never know :P I’m lucky if I can write 2 - 3 per week. Keep up the great work and I really hope I have the 1000th comment :D

I’m really interested to see where your other projects are going. I’ve been a read for a pretty long time (at least since feb - maybe longer) and I’ve seen this blog grow a lot and its been pretty amazing.

    Hi Connor,

Been longtime, but it looks like you’re doing rather well for yourself. I haven’t read every post, but I have been keeping an eye on what you’re doing through RSS and i’d like to tell anyone that’s reading this, that he’s one of the most consistent posters in the blog atmosphere.

Good, easy posts to read and you can be sure that there will be something new to read every few days, if not everyday as it has been for a while.

Keep up the good work, and if this is the thousandth comment, delegate it to the next commentator :)

Thanks Nathan. The consistent posting becomes a routine you hate to break after a while :P

The thousandth comment is still a few off. I’m in the 99x but I’ve already posted again. The 1000th comment could be tomorrow or today, or not even in this post.

After a second read I caught this, did you just make up and trademark a word? hahaha.

I’m in the same boat as Adam, but I can only write about 2-3 a month.

Those are some pretty good stats. 200 in 224 days is very impressive. What sort of Stumble or Digg action do you get? Its always good when you get some good hits form there.

@Ryan: Yes, I totally made that word up ;) Couldn’t find the option key to give me the TM on my Mac so I just superscripted it.

@Mutiny: I’ve only been Stumbled once, and it was on my 6th installment of the improve your blog series. I got about 310 hits that day. Never been Dugg, but almost.

That’s some great consistency you’ve got there, Connor. Nice job.

Also great that you’re approaching 1,000 comments. It shows you have an active community.
