Do You Have to Rely on Posting for Traffic?

Posting always seems to bring some initial traffic for me. Click troughs from RSS, while not many, paired with the occasional link, plus some freaky voodoo stuff boost the couple of hours’ traffic right up. But, I pose this question to you:

Can you rely on search engines, links and other factors to keep traffic up when you can’t provide fresh content? If the answer is no, then you have some work to do.

Relying on Search Engines

An oxymoron? No. You can rely on search engines for traffic, but don’t let this be your only other traffic source. SE traffic for me jumps around like crazy. There are good days and bad days, as well as dead days and amazing days. Can you predict? No. Can you prepare? Yes.

If you happen to rank highly for a certain well trafficked term, and it sends 1000 hits your way everyday, hypothetically, and you get a total of 1200 hits a day, where are your eggs? I’ll tell you where- in one basket. That’s bad. All of a sudden you get penalized or slip, what do you do then?

Relying on Reciprocal Links

Blogroll exchanges and the like really don’t give you a lot of traffic. One thing you’re really excited about when landing a huge link exchange with a popular blog is the traffic benefits. You’ll be disappointed, double time.

Think about this: I’d put a guess on that <10% of all users to any given site click a link. Will that link be yours?

Not many users are at a site to click links. If they see something that interests them they might, but that is mostly in the copy. The chances of a user getting all the way to the sidebar… the blogroll… your link, and then clicking it… Slim, to say the least. This isn’t to say you shouldn’t exchange links and you can’t get traffic out of them, but don’t depend.

Just Be Active

I’m posting late today. I like to have a post saved for auto posting at 11AM, but today I got home late and I’m exhausted. I’m finding my 30 minutes a day at 8PM. Today is still a good traffic day for me. This post should help. Posting despite I won’t get the full effects of it until tomorrow, and then it’ll be covered up by another post right after, is all good for activity. I’m alive! Still visit! (and subscribe)

Commenting, past articles I’ve written for other sites, search engines, link backs, really old 301 redirects, a little StumbleUpon, and other random sources have given me traffic for today. The more random sources you have, the better.

  • I totally agree that you can’t rely on one source of traffic.

My traffic greatly varies from day to day. For example yesterday I got 65 hits from Google and the day before that I only got 19.

I generally get most of my traffic from tutorial sites (P2L, Dzone, etc…). Because a few of my articles got to the front page of Dzone about 50% of my hits came from there but that traffic comes in lumps.

Btw thanks for suggesting P2L to submit my tutorials.

  • Its like making money online dont put all your eggs in one basket. If you post everyday the only people that are going to be mad when you dont post are your return visitors that keep reading everyday but if they infact like your blog they really shouldnt care if you miss posting a day.

One of my sites I rely soley on search engine traffic it counts for like 95% of my traffic, I am sure if I updated it more I could get more return visitors but I seem to be getting enough off of search engines!

  • With one of my websites my traffic sources are varied like Adam.

I get some hits from tutorial websites, some from social bookmarking websites and some from search engines.

  • I believe that if your content are not fresh, but they can help people, they will help those people. Therefore more traffic.
But we must not forget that it is people that give traffic so our post should always be people centered.
