Help a Blogger out - Bookmark and Tell
As one of many bloggers who don’t save/bookmark or submit their own stuff to social media sites, I’m always surprised when I get a boost of traffic. My only luck has ever been with StumbleUpon, but why would I submit my own site? I don’t need to bookmark it for later or anything like that.
I will however vote for my own stories once submitted. If someone feels it worthy, I’m all for it. The main thing is that I don’t write for social media. If I was going for link bait, you’d know. I daresay it would work too. As mentioned in the last two or so monthly stat reflections (makes a bunch of numbers sound awesome), I’m going for more ‘natural’ traffic.
By natural, I mean I let it come to me. I’m still going to post and do my marketing thing (whatever that may be), but I’m not going to do stuff to purposely get high(er) amounts of traffic. If I happen to get Stumbled a few times along the way, I won’t complain.
This brings me to my point- if you submit a blogger’s article- to Digg, StumbleUpon or whatever- leave a quick comment say you did. Just a quick comment:
Hey, liked the article! Stumbled it!
A few of my readers have done this and not only is it awesome to see, but when I go and vote myself, I get closer to reaching the threshold of votesĀ to send me some traffic.
Comments make a happy blogger. Comments like that make a really happy blogger. Random bursts of traffic, and you’re seeing fresh content for a month straight.
Because I don’t go for the huge frontpage articles doesn’t mean I don’t want to open Mint after a long day full of way too much exercise and soreness to see a really high number. Then again, StumbleUpon’s traffic is very slippery (opposite of sticky- works?) and is gone in a couple of seconds. That’s how I use SU, so I guess I’m guilty of that. If a page doesn’t load, doesn’t interest me or I’m not in the mood, I’ll move to the next.
So my crappy attempt at spinning a saying into my point, if you submit my articles, or anyone else’s, just a quick comment telling them is awesome. I don’t see it as spammy at all, in fact I love them, but if you’d rather send an email that’s just as good.

It does give off a good feeling when someone bookmarks your site and all of a sudden you get a peak of traffic and you are wondering where it came from! I can usually tell in google analytics if I have been stumbled the day before or not but would be great if people could just leave a comment saying that they have submitted it!

It would be a good idea to add some digg and stumble quicklinks at the bottom of all your posts. I never bother to Digg or Stumble unless its made easy for me.

I agree - it’s nice when you notice some traffic coming in from Digg or that type of site - and I agree with David - you should put quicklinks at the bottom of your posts as it is so much easier (and keeps it fresh in the users mind).
